Cymbidium Orchid Care
Cymbidium orchids are elegant, cool-growing orchids prized for their tall arching spikes and long-lasting flowers. With the correct care, they will flower reliably each year and become more impressive with maturity. Follow this care guide to ensure the long-term health and performance of your Cymbidium.
1. Light Requirements
Ideal Conditions:
Provide bright light all year round. Cymbidiums will tolerate more light than many other orchids.
- Bright conservatory or cool greenhouse
- South or west-facing windows (with light shading in peak summer)
- Outdoors from late spring to early autumn (acclimatise gradually)
Avoid:
- Deep shade (this prevents flowering)
- Sudden exposure to strong midday summer sun
Signs of Light Issues:
- Dark green leaves indicate insufficient light
- Yellowing or scorched patches indicate excessive direct sun
A Grower’s Top Tip:
If your Cymbidium has never flowered, increase light levels first. Light is the single most important factor in bloom production.
2. Temperature and Humidity
Temperature:
Daytime: 15–25°C
Night-time: 8–12°C in autumn is essential to initiate flower spikes
Avoid prolonged exposure below 5°C.
Cool autumn nights are critical. Without this natural temperature drop, flower spikes may not form.
Humidity:
Cymbidiums are less demanding than tropical orchids but benefit from:
- 40–60% humidity
- Good air movement at all times
Grower’s Top Tip:
Keeping plants outdoors until temperatures begin to approach 5–7°C in autumn naturally provides the temperature differential needed to trigger flowering.
3. Watering
Frequency:
During active growth (spring and summer), water generously. In cooler months, reduce frequency.
- Spring/Summer: Keep evenly moist
- Autumn/Winter: Allow the top of the compost to begin drying before watering
Method:
- Water thoroughly until water runs freely through drainage holes
- Never allow the pot to stand in water
- Rainwater is preferable where possible
Grower’s Top Tips:
- Cymbidiums are thirstier than many orchids, especially when producing new growth
- Strong pseudobulbs develop from consistent watering during active growth
- Overwatering in cold conditions is the most common cause of root issues
- Water in Spring every 7-10 days, Summer 3-7 days, Autumn 7-14 days and Winter 10-21 days
4. Potting & Media
Pot Type:
- Use a sturdy pot with excellent drainage
- Cymbidiums can become top-heavy — stability is important
- Repot every 2–3 years
Media:
Use a specialist Cymbidium orchid bark mix, slightly finer than standard orchid bark but still free-draining.
Grower’s Top Tips:
- Repot immediately after flowering when new growth begins
- Remove old decomposed compost completely
- Trim away dead, soft roots but retain all firm roots
- Cymbidiums prefer to be slightly tight in their pots
5. Fertilising
Frequency:
Use a balanced orchid fertiliser regularly.
- Spring to mid-summer: Every other watering with an orchid 'grow' concentrate feed
- Late summer onwards: Switch to a 'bloom' concentrate feed to encourage spike development
- Reduce feeding once flowering begins
Consistent feeding supports strong pseudobulb formation, which directly impacts next year’s flowers.
Grower’s Top Tips:
- Why we suggest using a concentrate feed every other watering is due to the high salt levels in most concentrate feeds.
6. Flowering & Bloom Care
Bloom Cycle:
Cymbidiums typically flower once annually.
- Spikes initiate in autumn
- Flowers open late winter to spring
- Blooms can last 6–10 weeks
To Encourage Flowering:
- Provide high light levels
- Ensure cool autumn nights (8–12°C)
- Feed appropriately in late summer
Post-Bloom Care:
- Cut the finished spike back to the base
- Resume feeding and watering to build strong new growth
Avoid moving the plant once buds are developing, as this can cause bud drop.
7. Pruning & Maintenance
Leaf Care:
Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain efficient photosynthesis.
Spike Care:
Remove finished flower spikes at the base using clean, sharp tools.
Root Health:
Healthy roots are firm and pale cream to white.
Remove black, soft or hollow roots during repotting.
8. Common Problems & Solutions
No Flowers:
Insufficient light or lack of cool autumn nights.
Black Leaf Tips:
Salt build-up from fertiliser. Flush compost thoroughly with rainwater.
Soft Growth or Yellowing Pseudobulbs:
Overwatering in cool conditions.
Bud Drop:
Sudden temperature fluctuations or moving the plant during bud formation.
9. Seasonal Care Adjustments
Winter:
- Keep cool but frost-free
- Reduce watering slightly
- Maintain good air circulation
Summer:
- Increase watering
- Feed regularly
- Place outdoors if possible (with gradual acclimatisation)
10. Miscellaneous Tips
Air Circulation:
Cymbidiums require good airflow year-round to prevent fungal problems.
Display Location:
Keep away from strong heating sources and avoid placing near ripening fruit (ethylene gas can shorten flower life).
Long-Term Success:
Healthy, well-fed pseudobulbs this year determine next year’s display. Focus on vegetative strength and flowering will follow.
Cymbidium orchids are robust, rewarding plants that improve with age. With proper light, feeding and crucially cool autumn nights, you can enjoy increasingly spectacular blooms year after year.
